The shelf bra is a specialist bra with half cups that finish just below the nipple, leaving most of the breast exposed. I would advise being selective about the occasion you choose to wear this bra!
Shelf bras, also known as platform or demi-cup in the UK, originated in 1940s America. The ‘shelf’ refers to the part of the bra below the breasts which provides support and horizontal lift. The bra enhances the appearance of the cleavage. Some have added support provided by under-wiring, which would probably suit women with large breasts.
This type of bra probably appeals to the more modestly endowed women but there’s no reason why the larger bosomed shouldn’t enjoy them too if the occasions call for it as they’re now available up size 44G.
